Before the 20th century, the electric vehicle industry was considered to be all but dead with little to no advancements in the technology and no interest being generated. However around the second half of the 20th century, interest in this technology due to two key factors.
One of these factors is thanks to Toyota with their new vehicle, the Toyota Prius. This hybrid sedan helped pioneer and normalise hybrid cars in the marked, with its usage of a nickel metal hydride battery. The hybrid nature of the car allowed for it to not only be more energy efficient than their non-hybrid counterparts, but also allowed for carbon pollution to be minimised.
The other factor is the announcement of a new vehicle by Silicon Valley startup Tesla Motors. This announcement of an electric sports car that is capable of driving more than 200 miles on a single charge of its battery caused many other car manufacturer to advance manufacturing of their own electric cars as a response to the announcement. This lead to the diverse range of electric cars seen on the market today.
